Anyone that knows me, knows that I LOVE robots. I’m fascinated by them and at the same time a little bit scared of them as I’m sure that they will one day result in the end of the world (my fears were confirmed when America tried to launch a global defense system called SKYNET – are you freakin kidding me!?). Anyway, this video shows a little Japanese robot called the NAO (about 2 feet tall), which in my honest opinion is quite cute, but looks like a cheap version of the ASIMO – an awesome robot about the size of a small child developed by Honda (I will post a clip on here one day!).
This video (a commercial) demonstrates some of the capabilities of the Nao, which include walking, object recognition, basic interaction, getting up after getting knocked down (pretty cool!) and some basic communication. In this video, the Nao encounters a rubber duck on the floor and picks it up. It then sees a dustbin, and decides that the rubber duck should go in the bin. Moments later, another Nao approaches and starts communicating with him. He asks, “Have you seen my rubber duck?”, to which the Nao says no! LIAR!! LIAR!! We just saw you, you f**king liar!!! It’s started… the robots are trying to deceive us! This is just the start. Today it’s a lie about a rubber duck, tomorrow could be nuclear war! I’m glad a human then comes into the scene and “accidentally” knocks him over. That’s right, stay on the floor you god damn liar.
Alternatively of course, the Nao could simply be telling the truth and doesn’t have software sophisticated enough to recognise the object that it just picked up and put in the bin. Should we give it the benefit of the doubt?
